Cur (ai) tor
c. 2021For this project, I decided to develop an intervention in response to a ‘designerly act’ that I felt could be automated. I pursued the direction of automating the role of a curator - I wanted to form a system where the AI could recognise an interior gallery space and automate the position of artworks through an augmented reality visualisation.
I imagined this in the form of an app. I produced the visual identity for the app, as well as a combined video to showcase and visualise how this might operate through 3D rendering. Therefore, there is not a real working app available as of yet.
Like many other ‘designerly acts’, curation is very much a subjective procedure. Therefore, rather than to fully eliminate and replace the role of curators, the app can instead be used to stimulate, inspire and generate more ideas for the placement of the artworks. It can be used more as a tool for those in the profession and perhaps as an essential system for the regular people who simply struggle to decide where to place particular artworks within their interior space, hence not only limited to galleries. If the recommended curation outcome by the AI is not taken into fulfilment by the user, the user will also have the ability to determine the organising principles and visualise the placement of the paintings based on variable elements such as scale, date of creation and colour.
